Each year, nations worldwide pump hundreds of billions of dollars into their military. It is an everlasting race to develop the most advanced technology and weaponry. 

According to Global Firepower, a company that developed an algorithm the determine a nation’s military strength, it has declared the following five most powerful militaries in the world. Their algorithm “utilizes over 50 individual factors with categories ranging from military might and financials to logistical capability and geography.”

1 United States

Not a surprise whatsoever. The US “retains its top spot as the undisputed military power in the world,” Global Firepower says.

America has more air units than any other country, with 2,085 fighter jets, 967 attack helicopters, 945 transports, and 742 special aircraft.

We also lead the world with 39,253 armored vehicles, 91 Navy destroyers, and 20 aircraft carriers, with an estimated 1,400,000 active-duty personnel.

2 Russia

According to Global Firepower’s statistics, Russia has the most tanks of any country globally: 12,950, more than double what the US has.

Russia has an estimated 1,013,628 active personnel on land with 27,038 armored vehicles, 6,083 units of artillery, and 3,860 rocket projectors.

Its air force consists of 873 fighter aircraft and 531 attack helicopters. In water, they have 62 submarines and 48 mine warfare ships.

3 China

The communist superpower has an estimated 2,183,000 active personnel, which is the largest in the world.

In recent years, China has been building out its Navy while engaging in territorial disputes across the South China Sea. Their Navy has 74 submarines, 52 frigates, and 36 destroyers.

4 India

India has an estimated 1,444,000 active-duty personnel.

The developing nation is amongst the world’s leaders, with 4,292 tanks, 4,060 towed artillery, and 538 fighter aircraft.

5 Japan

With estimated active military personnel of 247,160, this Asian country only has a fraction of the volatile neighbor North Korea’s headcount. Still, it makes up for it with its updated weaponry.

According to Global Firepower’s statistics, Japan has 152 special mission aircraft – more than any country in the world other than the U.S. and a formidable Navy fleet that contains 40 destroyers.
