US special forces and Marines have been deployed to Taiwan amid China tension. For about a year, US forces have been secretly training Taiwan’s military. This is because China has become more and more aggressive with territorial claims.

Dozens of special operatives and support troops are training small units of Taiwan’s troops. At the same time, a platoon of Marines is training Taiwan’s maritime forces on open water operations, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Many reports have come in stating that the Chinese military has made 149 military flights around Taiwan. As a matter of fact, 56 military flights were deployed on Monday, October 4th.

The US And China Tensions

Furthermore, these recent occurrences come at a time where tensions between the US and China have increased. These tensions are over issues ranging from trade to human rights to the pandemic.

According to the Journal, the Chinese foreign ministry states that China “will take all necessary steps to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Recently, spokesman John Supple released a statement revealing the Pentagon’s current position toward China and Taiwan.

“I don’t have any comments on specific operations, engagements, or training, but I would like to highlight that our support for and defense relationship with Taiwan remains aligned against the current threat posed by the People’s Republic of China.”

Supple continues saying the US pushes for a peaceful resolution to the tensions over Taiwan. However, China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and has increased claim to the island despite tolerating some independence in the past.
