On Friday (2/18), the Russian military announced massive nuclear drills, a bold reminder of its atomic might during fears that they might be preparing to invade Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will personally attend the exercise on Saturday to oversee it. The Defense Ministry said the drill would involve multiple test launches of ballistic missiles and cruise missiles.
Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, said Putin would observe the Defense Ministry’s situation room drills and supervise the practice missile launches himself.
Russia consistently holds nuclear drills annually, but Saturday’s plan will involve the Black Sea Fleet. The fleet is located in the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.
These war maneuvers come after US President Joe Biden’s forewarning that Russia could invade Ukraine within days.
Russia has insisted it has no plans to invade. However, an estimated 150,000 Russian troops are stationed near Ukraine’s borders.
Peskov claims Russia informed foreign partners about the drills in advance and shouldn’t cause worries in the West.
“Practice launches of ballistic missiles are part of regular training,” he said. “They are preceded by a series of notices to other nations via different channels.”
