The Marine Corps started as a group of sharpshooters that would protect Navy vessels and fight in the most intense battles of the Revolutionary War.
Over time, Marines have grown into their own military branch and earned themselves a reputation of being the most hardened, violent, and distinguished force in history.
The Marine Corps has continuously lived up to its reputation countless times, especially at the Battle of Fallujah.
The Battle of Fallujah is called “the biggest urban battle since the battle of Hue City in Vietnam.” However, not many people know about the battle itself, let alone the significance it portrays.
Since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the city had been a stronghold for insurgent forces. Many coalition forces had tried to secure the city however failed. The city quickly grew into a bastion, an impenetrable fortress manned by enemy forces.
In 2004, Marines were sent in to push all insurgents out of Fallujah, but many political problems came up and halted all efforts. Finally, the orders came in November, ordering Marines to liberate the city and eliminate all enemy forces from every inch of the city.
Marines of the 3rd battalion 1st Marine engaged in rigorous house-to-house combat. Marines engaged in one firefight after another; many were wounded from either small arms fire or indirect fire such as RPGs or mortars.
In addition, some houses were even leveled in suspicion of housing enemy defenses or personnel.
Finally, the US effort was successful. They had control of the city. Fighting continued throughout their city occupation; however, control over Fallujah was a critical step towards having the upper hand in the Iraq War.
