On Thursday, President Joe Biden said US special forces killed ISIS leader during an overnight raid in Syria’s northwestern Idlib province.
ISIS Leader Killed By US Forces
US special forces targeted Amir Muhammad Sa’id Abdal-Rahman al-Mawla, who took leadership of the militant group in 2019 after leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died from a US raid.
Witnesses said that US special forces landed in helicopters and assaulted a house in a rebel-controlled part of Syria. Residents described continuous gunfire and explosions that lasted for two hours. The clash happened in the town of Atmeh, which held camps for internally displaced people from Syria’s civil war.
Thirteen people were killed, according to a report, including six children and four women.
Biden said the purpose of the raid was to “protect the American people and our allies, and make the world a safer place.”
“Thanks to the skill and bravery of our Armed Forces, we have taken off the battlefield Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi — the leader of ISIS,” Biden said, confirming that all Americans involved in the mission returned safely.
“The mission was successful,” John Kirby, Pentagon press secretary, said in a statement. “There were no US casualties.”
