The VA Disability Rating System

If you’re wonder how to calculate VA disability rates, for every disability claim, the VA determines a severity rating ranging from 0-to 100%. This rating moves in increments of 10% and is based on service treatment records, VA medical records, and private medical records directly relating to the disability.

You may also receive additional benefits if:

      • You have severe disabilities or loss of limb(s)
      • You have a spouse, child(ren), or dependent parents
      • You have a disabled spouse

How Does the VA Disability Rating System Work?

As a result of your review and approval process, the VA assigns you a “disability rating.” The evidence you provide that proves the severity of your condition helps the VA specify an accurate rating for your disabilities.

Not all disabilities are rated under the same criteria. The 100-percent rating is given for the combined effects of multiple disabilities or a condition the VA deems very limiting.

The ratings of each disability are determined based on rating criteria, so the credibility of the evidence you submit is crucial.

To be eligible for monthly benefits from the VA, veterans must receive a disability rating of 10-percent or higher A. However, at a 0-percent rating, you can still qualify for health care.
