Over the weekend, the Coast Guard rescued 18 people trapped on an ice floe in Lake Erie.
Coast Guard officials said a helicopter noticed a group of people on the ice floe at around 1 pm Sunday. They saw several all-terrain vehicles looking for a way back to land.
According to the Coast Guard, the helicopter began hoisting operations and called in an airboat from a nearby Marblehead station.
The aircraft rescued seven people from the floe, and the airboat saved four others. The remaining seven people were picked up and taken to land by a good Samaritan who manned an airboat at the time.
Emergency medical professionals were on standby; however, none of the 18 people required medical attention.
Before the incident, authorities warned people to “stay off the ice on Lake Erie as there is the possibility that the ice will drift away from shore.”
