The Pentagon is alarmed by the rapid growth of China’s military muscle. Currently, the Chinese military is expanding on several fronts to end American dominance in the Asia-Pacific. The development is accumulating quickly in the Chinese nuclear arsenal, advances in space, and cyber and missile technologies.
“The pace at which China is moving is stunning,” says the No. 2-ranking US military officer, Gen. John Hyten. Hyten previously oversaw Air Force space operations and commanded US nuclear forces.
The global balance of power has favored the United States for decades; however, that position is at stake due to China’s rapid growth. This shift does not directly pose a threat, but it could complicate US alliances in Asia.
Details on how the Pentagon plans to handle China’s challenge may arise in the coming weeks. For example, the forthcoming Biden administration policy that reviews nuclear weapons, global troop basing, and overall defense strategy.
Currently, officials question how Beijing is conducting the resources, technology, and politics to achieve rapid growth. The Chinese are moving so smoothly that the Biden administration is attempting to rethink US foreign and defense policy aspects.
One of China’s most alarming feats of speed and achievement is their test of a hypersonic weapon that partially orbits the Earth and reenters the atmosphere, and glides directly to its target. The weapon system is designed to evade US missile defense; however, Beijing claimed they tested a reusable spacecraft.
“That’s just one weapon system,” said Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “The Chinese military capabilities are much greater than that. They’re expanding rapidly in space, in cyber, and then in the traditional domains of land, sea, and air.”
